About us

Who we are

The Centre for Indigenous Theatre is the only school of its kind in Canada. We seek to train you, the future Indigenous artist, to become tomorrow’s inspired and passionate Indigenous voice.


What we offer

We offer three & four-year full-time conservatory-style, post-secondary training prioritizing Indigenous culture; foregrounding the Indigenous theatre canon and prioritizing Indigenous knowledge, culture, language, values and practices.

Where we are

We are located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Ontario, in the Yongeplace Artscape Building on the second floor.

How it works

How it works is? You’re an Indigenous person looking to train in Theatre and Performing Arts. You contact us and we start a life changing conversation about your future.

Become a student

We have five key components enabling you, the students, to acquire and refine your skills incrementally through: core classes, specialized workshops, independent creation based on story weaving technique, mentorship, and performance.

Your giving will enable us to promote Rose’s video and get a whole bunch of eyes on it. You will drive her message out nationally, reaching new places across the country. You will help us connect to those budding Indigenous performers that may not know that we exist as a space for them to learn and grow. You will create opportunities for the CIT Class of 2019 to become the inspired and passionate Indigenous artists of the future, telling their stories in their own voice.

We are a school

CIT co-funds not only a student’s education but also provides support for transit, living & housing expenses. So, the better-funded we are, the more opportunities we can create for deserving students.

CIT provides an extremely valuable, one might even say ‘essential’, service to the Native community. It brings out the very best in the young people it works with, thus launching them into lives that are constructive, meaningful and substantial; lives that will then affect their own home communities in ways that are nothing but positive.

Tomson Highway

I attended the Summer Intensive while I was enrolled at University of Lethbridge. The experience left a huge impression on me. The following year I made the decision to transition from the University to attend the 3 year program in Toronto. It’s been one of the best decisions of my life; through CIT’s training and assistance I have carved out a career as an actor and playwright.
